# Fix a file that failed to process

> Use the message beside a failed document to identify the stage that stopped, recover that step and check whether processing has completed.

Use the message beside a failed item to recover the step that stopped. A document can finish one stage and fail at another.

| Stage | What is happening |
| - | - |
| Transfer | The file moves from your device to Alysium. |
| Processing | Readable knowledge is prepared from the file. |
| Attachment | The saved document is connected to an agent. |

Keep the original file on your device until the upload is complete. Avoid repeated uploads before checking what was already saved.

## Find the failed item

For an agent upload:

1. Open [Home](https://app.alysium.ai/spaces).
2. Select the intended agent.
3. Open **Build** → **Settings** → **Knowledge**.
4. Find the file in **Attached knowledge**.
5. Read its name, status and accompanying message.

If the upload began in [Library](https://app.alysium.ai/library), open the relevant upload or location there. Read the file's status and message, then continue with [Correct the cause](#correct-the-cause).

**Ready** means preparation completed. **Failed** needs attention. A processing spinner is a waiting state, not an instruction to delete the source.

## Correct the cause

| Message concerns | What to do before retrying |
| - | - |
| Format | Export to a supported actual format. Renaming an extension does not convert the file. |
| File size | Reduce or split the source. |
| Storage | Review usage and Trash using [Storage limits](https://docs.alysium.ai/knowledge-and-library/storage-limits.md). Resolve the space's storage issue first. |

[File and storage limits](https://docs.alysium.ai/help/file-and-storage-limits.md) lists supported formats and caps. Retry cannot make an unsupported or over-quota selection valid.

If the message says the document is saved in Library but not attached, go to [Recover the attachment](#recover-the-attachment).

## Retry the existing item when offered

After correcting the cause:

1. Select **Retry** if the failed row offers it.
2. Select the original file if Alysium asks for the same file again.
3. Wait for the updated state.
4. Check whether it reaches **Ready**.

An earlier browser session may no longer hold the local file needed for transfer. Use the same original file when requested.

Some saved document rows do not offer Retry. If no recovery action is available, use [Get help from a person](https://docs.alysium.ai/help/get-help-from-a-person.md) with the filename, file type and exact message. **Remove** is a different action from retrying.

## Recover the attachment

If the document is saved in Library but not attached:

1. Select **Retry attachment** beside the warning.
2. Check that the source appears in this agent's **Attached knowledge**.

This repairs the connection to the agent. It does not upload or process another copy.

If you intended a different agent, follow [Use Library files in an agent](https://docs.alysium.ai/knowledge-and-library/use-library-files-in-an-agent.md) to attach the saved material there. Do not assume an unsuccessful attachment connected it elsewhere.

## Check the recovered result

Confirm the document is Ready. If it is meant for an agent, also confirm it is attached to that intended agent, then ask about a fact the source contains.

[Test your agent while you build](https://docs.alysium.ai/build-your-agent/test-your-agent-while-you-build.md) explains how to find the preview and check that reply.

If a corrected file keeps failing, give support the file type, visible state and exact message. Avoid sending confidential content unnecessarily.

If you choose to delete a failed row, read the action carefully; deletion is separate from retry. [Upload and file messages](https://docs.alysium.ai/help/upload-and-file-messages.md) explains the visible stages.
