# Set a welcome message and starter prompts

> Set an editable agent's welcome message and starter questions so visitors can understand its job and begin a relevant conversation with it.

Set an editable agent's greeting and starter questions to help visitors understand its job and begin a conversation.

The welcome message is the opening greeting. Starter prompts are suggested questions visitors can choose to begin. They introduce the agent; its instructions and knowledge determine how it should answer.

## Find the fields

1. Open [Home](https://app.alysium.ai/spaces).
2. Select the intended agent.
3. Open **Build** → **Settings**.
4. Find **Welcome Message** and **Suggested Conversation Starters**.

If those fields are already open, continue with [Write the welcome message](#write-the-welcome-message). Home opens your current space so you can choose the right agent.

## Write the welcome message

Keep the greeting to **50 words or fewer**. The field has a word counter and warns when the text is too long.

For a fictional shop assistant:

> Hi, I help with our hiking-boot notes and shop FAQ. Tell me what you need, or choose a question below. If our notes do not cover it, I will point you to the shop team.

Replace the example with your agent's actual scope.

1. Enter your greeting in **Welcome Message**.
2. Wait for its automatic save.

Correct any validation message before continuing. On a computer, hover over the builder's save indicator to check for **All changes saved**.

## Choose useful starter questions

You can have **up to 5 prompts**. Choose questions supported by the agent's actual documents or instructions.

For the fictional shop, examples include:

* How should I compare hiking boots?
* What should I bring when asking about a return?
* What information do you have about this shop?

Use these only if your agent can help with them. A question about live stock lookup or order placement would mislead visitors unless that capability exists.

### Edit an existing starter

1. Replace the text in the starter's field.
2. Click or tap outside the field to save it.

Continue with [Show starters to visitors](#show-starters-to-visitors).

### Add a starter

1. Select **Add prompt**.
2. Enter a question.
3. Click or tap outside the field to save the text.

Repeat for other useful questions, within the five-prompt limit. Continue with [Show starters to visitors](#show-starters-to-visitors).

### Remove an unwanted starter

Use the entry's X button labelled **Remove prompt**. Adding or removing an entry saves immediately; edited text saves when you leave its field.

After removing any unsupported questions, continue with [Show starters to visitors](#show-starters-to-visitors).

## Show starters to visitors

Writing the questions in Build and showing them in the widget are separate choices.

1. Open **Design**.
2. Find **Features**.
3. Turn on **Starter prompts**.
4. Select **Save Changes**.
5. Wait for **All Changes Saved**.
6. Check the widget preview's opening screen.

On a smaller screen, select the **Preview** subtab to inspect the widget. Use [Preview your widget](https://docs.alysium.ai/design-your-widget/preview-your-widget.md) for the visitor-view checks.

You are finished when the greeting and questions are saved and the intended opening appears in preview. For other display choices, use [Turn widget features on or off](https://docs.alysium.ai/design-your-widget/turn-widget-features-on-or-off.md).

## If the greeting or starters are missing

* **The greeting has a validation error:** shorten it to the counter's limit and let it save.
* **A starter edit is missing:** return to **Suggested Conversation Starters**, enter the text and click outside its field.
* **Saved starters do not appear:** check **Design** → **Features** → **Starter prompts**, then save Design changes.
* **The opening looks unchanged:** confirm the intended agent and its opening screen. An existing conversation is different from a fresh opening.

Greeting validation and prompt saving are separate. Fix an overlong greeting even if the prompts have saved.
