# Let AI draft or refine your instructions

> Ask Alysium to propose instructions for an existing agent, review and refine the proposal, then apply or discard it and check the saved result.

Ask Alysium to propose instructions for an agent you already have. You can review and refine the proposal before applying it.

Use an agent you can edit in a space you own. Drafting and each refinement use credits. If you prefer to write directly, use [Write your agent's instructions](https://docs.alysium.ai/build-your-agent/write-your-agents-instructions.md).

This flow changes instructions for an existing agent. Creating a new agent is a separate task. Reference documents still belong in Knowledge.

## Open the instruction helper

1. Open [Home](https://app.alysium.ai/spaces).
2. Select the intended agent.
3. Open **Build** → **Settings**.
4. In **Agent Builder**, select **Generate Agent Prompt** above **Agent Instructions**.

Home opens your current space; choose the agent whose instructions you want to change. Keep a copy of existing instructions you want to preserve before replacing them.

If the helper's request box is already open, continue with [Request a proposal](#request-a-proposal). If it instead shows a continuing conversation from guided creation, follow [Refine instructions already in the editor](#refine-instructions-already-in-the-editor).

## Request a proposal

Describe the audience, task, answer style and limits. For a fictional shop, you could ask:

> Help customers understand our hiking-boot notes. Ask about their terrain and fit needs. Use plain language. Do not invent stock or return policies; say when the supplied notes do not answer the question.

Replace this with your real task. Describe the desired behavior without including private account details.

1. Enter your request in the helper's text box.
2. Select **Draft prompt**.
3. Wait for the proposed instructions to appear.
4. Read the entire proposal, including its limits and assumptions.

A visible proposal has not yet been applied to the editor. Use [Refine the proposal](#refine-the-proposal) to correct invented features or policies before applying it.

## Refine the proposal

If the proposal needs a change, give a specific follow-up. For the fictional shop:

> Keep the same job, but ask only one question at a time and make the suggested next step a short sentence.

1. Enter your follow-up request.
2. Select **Refine**.
3. Wait for the revised proposal.
4. Read it before deciding whether to apply it.

If suggestion chips appear, selecting one starts a refinement immediately. Each refinement uses credits.

A suggested skill is separate from the instruction text. Add it only if you want that extra guidance; [Add skills to your agent](https://docs.alysium.ai/build-your-agent/add-skills-to-your-agent.md) explains that task.

Continue with [Apply or discard the proposal](#apply-or-discard-the-proposal).

## Apply or discard the proposal

Choose the control that matches the editor's state:

| Control | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Insert instructions** | Applies the proposal when the editor is empty. |
| **Replace instructions** | Replaces instructions already in the editor. |
| **Discard** | Dismisses the proposal without applying it. |

To apply your chosen proposal:

1. Select **Insert instructions** or **Replace instructions**, as shown.
2. Wait for the normal instructions save to finish.
3. Check the text in **Agent Instructions**.

If you discard the proposal, continue editing manually with [Write your agent's instructions](https://docs.alysium.ai/build-your-agent/write-your-agents-instructions.md).

**Undo replace** appears briefly after a replacement. Use it promptly if you applied the wrong proposal. It is not permanent version history.

Continue with [Check the saved instructions](#check-the-saved-instructions).

## Refine instructions already in the editor

After guided agent creation, the helper may show a continuing conversation with **Refine** and **Dismiss**. The initial instructions are already in the editor in this state.

If you want to keep the initial instructions, select **Dismiss** and continue with [Check the saved instructions](#check-the-saved-instructions).

To change them:

1. Read the current **Agent Instructions**.
2. Enter a specific follow-up request in the helper.
3. Select **Refine**.
4. Read the new proposal.
5. Continue with [Apply or discard the proposal](#apply-or-discard-the-proposal).

The initial instructions are already applied; a new refinement is a proposal that you still choose whether to apply.

## Check the saved instructions

Applying a proposal uses the normal automatic save for instructions. Let the save indicator near the top of the builder finish before leaving. On a computer, hover over it to check for **All changes saved**.

Return to [Home](https://app.alysium.ai/spaces), reopen the same agent and check **Build** → **Settings** → **Agent Instructions**. Confirm your intended text remains.

Then try a question relevant to the task. Use [Test your agent while you build](https://docs.alysium.ai/build-your-agent/test-your-agent-while-you-build.md) to compare a reply with the instructions and sources.

## If drafting or refinement fails

* **Drafting credits are exhausted:** review the current space's usage in [Billing](https://app.alysium.ai/spaces?settings=billing), or continue editing the existing instructions manually.
* **A follow-up fails:** the last good proposal stays visible. Read the error before trying the refinement again.
* **The proposal invents a policy or capability:** request a correction through [Refine the proposal](#refine-the-proposal) before applying it.
* **The applied text does not save:** preserve it in your notes and follow the save recovery in [Write your agent's instructions](https://docs.alysium.ai/build-your-agent/write-your-agents-instructions.md).
